Odyssey

by Rafi Weichert

Translated from the Hebrew by Karen Alkalay Gut

Late at night you return
Home, feeling through the grey stairway
And open the door.  Inside, as always, waits
The folly of your life, like a backward and silent child.
You turn on the light, throw down your bag
And pull open the curtain.  In the dark window Death
Does not add or take away. As in yesterday
The future still waits for you as patient
As a dishwasher.

The heat of the room compels you out to the balcony
And before you the lights of the indifferent city are revealed
That do not invite flying.
A few flights below an alley cat
Flips open a lid, scares himself.
And in the building across the way a neighboring couple
Argue piercingly.
And despite this, before you enter, for a moment,
Among the noise of the cars, from far away,
You still imagine you hear
The sound of sirens singing.
