Note: This photograph was taken in the thatched cottage at Liliesleaf farm where Nelson Mandela hid for several months while working on the Freedom Charter. These are birthday greetings from his 90th birthday, sent by children from all over South Africa.

South African/U.S. writer Tony Eprile’s novel, The Persistence of Memory, won the Koret International Jewish Book Award. His photographs have appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, Gourmet, Discover Magazine, and The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting. He taught at Bar-Ilan’s Creative Writing Graduate MFA program in 2011.
