Linda Zisquit Translation Folio: Poem by Susan Afterman
Translated from Hebrew
Frank Would Skin the Sheep
John and I watching
he would lift the corpse
a rope tied to its hind legs,
the head cut off and gone.
He would tighten the rope
tie it to a eucalyptus branch
next to the shearing shed
Frank would punch at the line
between the flesh and the hide
peel it off with the wool
using outward tearing motions
we were witness
to unusual colors
the colors of the inner organs
cream and gray, blues and greens
our step-father would punch and punch
until all the hide peeled off
like sheepskin tights
sewn to fit
after the beating
the body transparent and silvery
naked and refined
an object without defense
Frank would take out the knife
John and I watching
and slice the sheep’s stomach
a long neat cut
from the ribs to the groin.
The intestines’ many shades of blue
pipes tangled and shiny
would protrude even more
till the moment the weight
had to fall
they would somersault out like a newborn
John and I watched many times
Frank would hang the carcass in a fly-wire closet
protected from flies and other insects
sometimes we’d see worms
pulsing and sparkling like stars
