French-fry-omelet sandwich

Feasting on the cheap

– Half a baguette
– French fries
– Two eggs
– Whatever sauce you want

Me, 44 years old, full-time poet

When I first got here, the outer borough
This was the first sandwich I ate
The very first meal, actually
I was up to my neck in boxes
I didn’t know a single person
I was low as a bootsole
My first meal out
Just downstairs from my apartment
Rue de Paris
MHAJBI’S FAMOUS FRENCH-FRY OMELET SANDWICH

The french fries are in the omelet
Not under
Not on top
They are inside it
The cook grabs a handful
He puts them on the flat grill
He breaks the eggs over them
He mixes it together with a metal spatula you might find on a construction site

—Well done or normal?
—Well done.
—You want a drink?
—No drink.
—Sauce?
—Harissa.

He puts the french-fry-omelet in the baguette
He puts sauce on top
And there you go
4 euros
You’re stuffed the whole day

I love everything at Mhajbi’s, I’ve tried it all, it’s just downstairs from my apartment. Eventually, the regulars took me in, so now it feels like home. Also, I’m always learning new Arabic words. Strongly recommend!

Sandwich omelette-frites

La régalade bon marché

– ½ baguette pain blanc
– Frites maison

Mon premier repas dehors

Hard knock breakfast

At the ambassador’s residence

– Nesquik
– Water

Julien, 29 years old, self-taught tattoo artist

This is for when you’re at your pops’s place
There’s Nesquik but no milk
Slipped his mind
Or he didn’t even know what you might need, you could say
So just: Nesquik / water
Gotta have a lot of Nesquik and just a little bit of water
Makes a kind of super sugary, kinda gross Yoplait

Initially, I just saw my pops in supervised places
So we didn’t really eat
But once it had been a while
Things got heated with my mom
She was salty about school stuff
And I ended up kicked out of her place
She said oh yeah?!
You’re gonna learn a thing or two living with your pops for a bit
And so I went and honestly it was tough
You know what I ate there?
These little round crackers
They were kinda like biscotti, but round
Dry and crumbly
I ate them with Nutella
Just that—that was all I ate
While he only ate these cookies
He’d drink and he’d eat these Bonne maman cookies
Poppyseed cookies
Like, he’d eat nothing but those
It’s not good, poppyseed
It’s gross
I don’t like it
Which is why he bought me those crackers
With Nutella
That’s what I ate

Mostly it was whiskey and rum
And after that, beer on beer on beer
Strong beer
The cheap kind, you know
The kind bums drink
He’d drink alone
Alone or with others
He still had a friend back then, he’d go over to his place
Bring over some Skyy
I think he’s dead now, the friend

On top of that, my pops would smoke hash the whole day
Now, that’s fine
He’s chilled out
He’s getting old
He’s got a lady who calms him down
Well, not so much calming him down as defogifies him
Because he’s got some edge
But he’s still a fogey
He’s got the strangest wardrobe
Pants from Goodwill
Old tanktops
He wears tanktops in February
That kind of guy
Flipflops the whole year through
Even in winter when it’s cold as a Swiss granny
You see a guy on the corner wearing flipflops
That’s my pops
That’s normal to him

DUUUUUUUDE IT’S FEBRUARY DON’T WEAR YOUR FLIPFLOPS!!

He’s a sculptor these days my pops
He even won a contest
In some towns, they want to replace the Marianne statue
In one town, they chose one of his sculptures

He was telling me, what did he say?
He said, this is how I showed up
There were probably 100 people, city councilmen in suits and everything
The mayor with the big ribbon
A WHOLE-ASS CEREMONY

They were going to cut the ribbon with these huge scissors
And there he was, in his tanktop and flipflops
There are pictures on the web
You can see him like that
In the middle of all those councilmen

What would you say?
I joked with him
You look like the ambassador of Fogeystan

He was pretty cool about it
That’s my pops

Le petit-dej’ de la Hess

Chez monsieur l’ambassadeur

– Nesquik
– Eau

Julien, 29 ans, tatoueur autodidacte

Il me raconte, il me dit quoi?

On dirait quoi?
Je lui ai dit pour rigoler
On dirait l’ambassadeur du Schlaguistan

Après, il est frais en vrai
C’est mon daron
